VF-1S Valkyrie
The VF-1S Valkyrie is one of the most iconic variable fighters in the Macross universe, best known as the commander-type machine flown by Roy Focker of Skull Squadron. It belongs to the VF-1 Valkyrie family, a transforming aerospace fighter designed to operate as a jet-like Fighter, a hybrid GERWALK unit, and a humanoid Battroid. Compared with standard VF-1 models, the VF-1S is presented as an elite variant produced in limited numbers and usually assigned to senior pilots or squadron leaders. Its distinctive head unit carries four Mauler RÖV-20 laser cannons, giving it a more aggressive and recognizable Battroid silhouette. In combat, it combines high-speed air and space performance with the close-range versatility of a robot, making it one of the defining mecha designs of early Macross. Roy Focker’s black, white and yellow Skull Squadron colors turned the VF-1S into a visual symbol of veteran skill, battlefield confidence and old-school pilot charisma. The machine can also use equipment such as the Super Pack system for space operations or the GBP-1S Armored Pack for heavier Battroid combat. Its main weapon, the GU-11 gunpod, reinforces the aircraft-meets-robot identity that made the Valkyrie feel more mechanical and military than many earlier anime robots. For collectors, the VF-1S is especially important because its sharp head, swept wings, skull markings and three-mode transformation make it instantly recognizable even outside Macross fandom. As a display piece, it represents the perfect balance between realistic fighter aircraft, transforming toy engineering and heroic anime mecha presence.
