Popy™

Popy was a Japanese toy brand and manufacturer owned by Bandai, active mainly during the 1970s and early 1980s. The company became one of the most influential names in character toys by turning popular anime, tokusatsu and superhero properties into highly playable figures, vehicles and role-play items. Its greatest legacy is the Chogokin line, famous for giving robot toys a heavy die-cast feel and making characters such as Mazinger Z central to Japanese toy collecting. Popy also helped define the appeal of large robot toys, transformation gimmicks, launchable weapons and screen-inspired accessories. Although the company was merged back into Bandai in 1983, its design language and collector reputation continued through later Bandai brands and modern Chogokin releases. For collectors, Popy represents the golden age of Showa-era Japanese character toys, where durability, metal parts and imaginative play came together in a very distinctive way.
