VF-1J Valkyrie

The VF-1J Valkyrie is one of the most recognizable machines from the original Macross era, sitting between the mass-produced VF-1A and the higher-command VF-1S. Built by Shinnakasu Heavy Industries, it is an upgraded single-seat Variable Fighter usually associated with skilled pilots, team leaders and squadron-level heroes. Like all VF-1 Valkyries, it can transform between Fighter mode, the hybrid GERWALK mode and the humanoid Battroid mode, giving it a strong identity as both aircraft and robot. The VF-1J is especially famous as Hikaru Ichijyo’s main machine in Super Dimension Fortress Macross, with the white body and red markings becoming one of the franchise’s classic images. It is also closely linked to ace pilots Maximilian Jenius and Milia Fallyna Jenius, whose blue and red customs gave the model even more collector appeal. Compared with the VF-1S, the VF-1J has a simpler but very elegant head design with two Mauler RÖV-20 laser cannons, creating a balanced and heroic Battroid silhouette. Its GU-11 gunpod, underwing missiles and optional equipment make it feel practical, military and highly adaptable rather than purely decorative. The GBP-1S Armored Valkyrie configuration is particularly iconic, turning the VF-1J into a heavily armed Battroid loaded with missiles and armor plates. The VF-1J also works beautifully as a toy or model because its proportions remain strong in every form, from sleek jet to walking GERWALK to classic humanoid mecha. For collectors, it represents the everyday hero version of the Valkyrie: not as rare as the VF-1S, but more personal, colorful and closely tied to the pilots who made Macross unforgettable.
