VF-1D Valkyrie
The VF-1D Valkyrie is the two-seat training version of the classic VF-1 variable fighter from Super Dimension Fortress Macross. Unlike the more famous command or ace-pilot machines, the VF-1D is closely linked to instruction, transition training and the first experience of piloting a Valkyrie in real combat conditions. Its tandem cockpit gives it a very different personality from the single-seat VF-1A, VF-1J and VF-1S, making it feel more practical, human and story-driven. In the series, the VT-102 unit becomes memorable because civilian pilot Hikaru Ichijyo is unexpectedly drawn into battle inside it during the opening chaos of Space War I. The VF-1D still keeps the full three-mode transformation system, shifting between Fighter, GERWALK and Battroid, so it is not merely a harmless trainer but a fully capable variable fighter. Its head design includes two camera “eyes” and two Mauler RÖV-20 laser cannons, giving the Battroid form a distinct look compared with other VF-1 variants. It can carry the GU-11 gunpod and use equipment associated with the VF-1 family, including heavy armor or space-operation packs depending on the mission. One of its most interesting features is the detachable forward fuselage, which works as a cockpit capsule and can be carried by another Valkyrie during rescue situations. For collectors, the VF-1D stands out because it represents the beginning of Hikaru’s journey, the everyday training side of U.N. Spacy, and the more grounded military logic behind the Valkyrie program. Its orange-and-white trainer colors, dual-seat canopy and unusual head make it instantly recognizable among VF-1 toys and models. The later blue “Virgin Road” version also gives the VF-1D a more celebratory and romantic place in Macross history, connected to the famous Max and Milia wedding flight. As a display piece, the VF-1D is less about pure ace status and more about transformation, survival, discovery and the moment an ordinary pilot is pulled into a much larger war.
