Mattel • Original Series

Manufacturer: Mattel™ • Released: 1987

Released by Mattel, the Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future toy line stood out for its interactive concept, combining action figures, vehicles, playsets and VHS missions. Several toys could react to light signals from the animated tapes or the TV broadcast, allowing players to shoot targets on screen, score points, lose “hit points,” and trigger effects such as the Captain Power figure’s glowing “Power On” sequence. The vehicles could also interact with each other in a way similar to laser-tag toys. A second, rarer wave appeared in 1988, although the release status of some figures, such as the Dread Trooper and Dread Commander, remains uncertain.
